I've followed my doctor's orders, and have stopped the BP meds, and have been taking my supplements again. I'm already starting to notice improvements in my sense of smell- I'm getting actual ambient scents, rather than that muddy, nasty ashy-metallic burning sensation. And the stink-bomb 'center' of my perfume is gradually returning to its normal scent as well. Yes, I've been wearing my "Clean" perfume to test my nose from time to time. It's been unpleasant, but it is also a gauge of what is going on, too. Normalcy is returning- and just in time, too- next weekend I am going to a food show with my sister in New Orleans. NOLA peeps- get in touch!

It's amazing how much my sense of smell adds to my quality of life. Same with taste. I am going to suggest to my sister that perhaps she should supplement magnesium and zinc to her diet- that might help her get her own senses back, even partially.

It's interesting that the extremes of an element- in this case, zinc- can make such a dramatic difference in neurological function. I am just glad it wasn't an excess. Did the BP meds deplete it, and the magnesium? Who knows. As I lose weight, it will make that a non-issue. It's coming down slowly, which is good. My body is adjusting properly- it doesn't feel like it is starving. I might just succeed this time.

Teeth Whitening

Can anyone recommend a good place to have one's teeth whitened in the Austin or Hill Country area?  I'd be coming from Marble Falls so it'd be a drive either way.

Also, I'd be curious how your whitening experience was.  Do you recommend it?

TIA!

Virtual Vicarious Vacation Friday: Washington, D.C.
  shanna_s

10:17am 10/07/2009
This schedule adjustment thing is getting ridiculous. Today I was up at 6:30. That may have had something to do with the fact that I went swimming yesterday, which meant I slept really well last night. The annoying thing is, there isn't much I can do with the extra time when I get up that early. The library doesn't open until 10, and although I'm awake, I'm not really in the frame of mind to write. Today I did some yoga and read the newspaper thoroughly.

It's another Virtual Vicarious Vacation Friday! For those who missed the announcement last week, I've decided that since a lot of us aren't getting to travel this year, I'll share some of my old travel photos (sadly, mostly from business trips). While I'm on the subject of vacation alternatives, like the "staycation," I've got an entry for the "people unclear on the concept" files. A local Realtor had a full-page ad in the newspaper this week, advertising the fact that with these homes you could have a real staycation. The homes had such features as a Napa Valley-style wine cellar, an in-home movie theater, a water park-style swimming pool, etc. If you can afford a home like that, I don't think a staycation is really an issue for you. You can just take your private jet wherever you want to go.

This week, we're in Washington, D.C., giving a little preview for those going to the RWA conference, and a couple of these were taken during the last DC conference.

First, to give you a little glimpse of the neighborhood where the conference is held, this shot looks up Connecticut Avenue toward the convention hotel area. I think that bridge is called the Francis Scott Key bridge, but I'm not absolutely certain and I don't have a guide handy to double check. I went to Georgetown for lunch with some friends, and they had an event they needed to get back earlier for, so I wandered and explored Georgetown on my own (even though it was raining), then checked the map and realized it wasn't actually all that far from where I was to the hotel, if I took the right route, so I walked all the way back.

The convention hotel is in walking distance of the Washington National Cathedral (though, mind you, my definition of "walking distance" isn't exactly based on normal human beings and I am mildly insane when it comes to walking). You'll need a map, though, as the way isn't marked and you'll have to weave through some residential neighborhoods (some very nice ones) up a steep hill to get there. But there's a big payoff, as it's a spectacular sight (I took this the day before the 2000 RWA conference).

I think my favorite memorial on the Mall (so far -- I haven't been there since they built the WWII Memorial) is the Korean War Memorial. It's very haunting. I must really like it because I found very similar photos from a couple of different trips.

A Promise

mood: contemplative
The following is an article from the July-August AARP Bulletin. I am sharing it in its entirety, because it will mean more this way than if I just shared my thoughts on it.

"A Flag and a Promise Live On

It was a chance encounter in a cemetery between two mothers, but that fleeting exchange more than a decade ago had a lasting effect on Mary Worden, 70. The Toledo, Ohio, woman had been visiting the cemetery with her husband to place a flag on her parent's grave. The woman she met had been visiting her son's grave. :She told me her son had been killed ingt he VItenam War." Worden says, but his grave didn't have a flag. Worden wound up handing the woman her flag.

Later, Worden discovered the grave belonged to Vito Bruno, a 24-year old Army medic who died in 1966. That day she promised that Bruno's grave would get a flag every year. And for more than 10 years, she kept her word.

But this year, her husband is ill, and Mary couldn't make the trip to the gravesite. After a local newspaper publicized her plight, students from Bruno's alma mater, Central Catholic High School, pledged to carry out Worden's promise. Teacher Tony Katafiasz, 33, a Marine Corps vetern, says his students will bring flags to the cemetery on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. It will help teach them about what you owe your country." by Candy Sagon

This story meant a lot to me. You see, I am a Viet Nam era Army vet myself.

On this day, I am thankful that:

* Good people are still doing good things.
* The day is lovely, and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
* I received unexpected help editing a recent (important to me) review.
* The birds are singing - and I just got done refilling their bird seed!
* I am enjoying life!

Blessings,
Bonnie

Cheap Mixed drinks on a Friday night?
  austincommunity - (mindaroth)

08:47am 10/07/2009
Okay, so my sister JUST turned 21, and she won't drink anything so accessible as beer. Now, 6th street is not really my thing at all, but I'd like to take her someplace where she can get sick on margaritas or something without it costing her too much. (She's broke, and I don't want to solely fund her binge.)

Opal Divine's has crappy cocktail hour prices. Does anyone know where I can get mixed drinks or cheap margaritas for $2-$3 a drink. Happy hour is fine. Would LOVE to stay off 6th if I can.

WVMP 3 has a name

At ALA now (actually, I'm writing this before I leave, but let's pretend). When I return home more than a week from now, I have ten days to finish the third WVMP book, which is now officially titled....

BRING ON THE NIGHT

after the song by The Police.

I am very jazzed that they let me keep my original choice for the title, as it fits the storyline even better than the titles of my other books.

Bring on the Night still has no official release date. I only know for sure that it will be 2010 and definitely not May, because that's when my teen fiction debut, Shade, will be released. Since publishers like to space an author's books at least a couple of months apart, I expect BotN to come out somewhere between July and September of next year.

I know, it's cruel to make readers wait more than a year between installments, but the good news is, your patience will be rewarded, because Book 4 (tentatively titled Lust for Life) will be released in Spring 2011 (I'm guessing February or March), thus giving you two WVMP books in about six months. Happy times!

This ramped-up publishing schedule means my writing schedule has also gotten busier, but I promise I won't forget my loyal blog readers (both of you). I have a fun event planned for this September to celebrate my five-year blog-iversary.

Stay tuned!

Have a great weekend!

  Dear Sui, dear Juu,

I got both of you a few weeks ago from a friend who couldn't keep you anymore... and I hope you feel at home already, especially with your new big cage.

Today I've bought some healthier food (made for budgies) for you online (since the one from the pet store isn't good enough in my opinion).
I hope both of you will eat it... and I hope you'll start to eat some fruits soon (so Sui... please stop throwing the red currants out of your feeding dish - they're there for you to EAT, you know).

Inexpensive Wedding Venue & Dresses
  austincommunity - (ashleyrains)

07:51am 10/07/2009
  Hello Fellow Austinities!

I am recently engaged and trying to plan my wedding. I am hitting a brick wall looking for a venue that is not super expensive! I've found some that are more reasonable, but still too expensive, I felt. It just makes me feel sick to spend $3,000-5,000 on a wedding!

Here's what I need: A venue that can host the ceremony and reception for about 100 people. We are willing to go up to 1.5 hours out of Austin. If they would allow our two older, well-behaved and well-trained 60 pound dogs that would be a plus plus plus!!! Even if just for the ceremony. Indoors preferred, off-beat is even better. The lower the price, the more I like it!!

I've searched the tags, but nothing really fits the bill very well. The free chapel looks nice, but is too small.

I also need to find a wedding dress. A place with consignment dresses or rental dresses is great. Or just inexpensive all-around is fine. I'm not interested in buying from an individual. Sorry. I want to try on lots of dresses before I make a decision. Doesn't have to be in Austin. I'll go as far away as San Antonio.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: The reason I don't want outdoors is that I'm a redhead with super pale skin. I can be in the sun for 3-5 minutes and I burn. Put me out there for 30 minutes and I'll be hurting for a week. I just really don't want to have to wear sunscreen at my wedding... esp. under my makeup. I normally wear SPF 15 foundation, but still need more if I'm in the sun for more than 15 minutes. Even the best sunscreen can be bothersome. My maid of honor (sister) has the same problem. Maybe if it was very well-covered.

Hello! :) I'm fairly new to tarot.. I've had a deck for a few years but I don't really have many cards memorized and I'm not even sure if I know how to interpret them properly. My question is: when doing a spread do I need to verbalize which one I'm going to do? If I have some questions can I just say them out loud and then flip a card? For example: If I want to know my strengths, weaknesses and goals would I just say "My strengths" then flip over card 1, "My weaknesses" then flip over card 2? etc I hope I'm not being too confusing :( I'm sorry. Any help would be great.
